Militão Returns Stronger After Injury
In the fast-paced world of modern football, injuries are not an exception but rather a painful reality of the game. Yet, the story of Éder Militão, Real Madrid’s central defender, stands out as one of the most inspiring in recent years. After suffering two torn ACLs within a span of less than 18 months, and virtually missing the entire 2023-2024 season, Militão is making a determined comeback at the end of the 2024-2025 campaign. His mental strength and unwavering will to return to the top reflect a player on a mission.

The Day After the Injury: A Message of Strength
Just a day after his latest injury, Militão sent a powerful message to his technical and medical teams: “There’s nothing to regret. I’ve been through this before, and I know how to handle it. Let’s get to work.” These words, shared by his personal trainer Romario Queiroz, reflect remarkable mental maturity in a 27-year-old. They were not just motivational— they marked the beginning of a recovery path built on experience, discipline, and willpower.
Two Injuries in a Short Span… and a Rapid Recovery
What makes Militão’s journey exceptional is the speed of his recovery. After his first injury to the left knee, he underwent a successful operation performed by Dr. Manuel Leyes and returned to play in less than six and a half months. The second injury, this time to the right knee at the start of the 2024-2025 season, didn’t break his spirit either. He rejoined group training after just 195 days. Medical tests confirmed that, unlike cases such as David Alaba’s, there was no cartilage damage in Militão’s case.
The Team Behind His Return
This successful comeback is the result of a well-coordinated support team. Among them, physiotherapist Jaime Salom from Real Madrid and personal trainer Romario Queiroz played key roles. Queiroz monitored his progress from Brazil, visiting Madrid frequently, and Militão also traveled to Brazil during international breaks to continue his rehab. The program they followed integrated both physical and psychological support.
“We often had to play the role of psychologists,” Queiroz admits. “After some training sessions, we would talk for long periods. These injuries are not just treated through exercises — they require a well-prepared and understanding mind.”
The Greater Challenge: Body or Mind?
When a player suffers two ACL tears in a short time, one must ask: is the greatest challenge physical recovery or mental resilience? Militão’s team insists the psychological aspect was key. Striking a balance between a gradual return and avoiding excessive pressure is essential. Queiroz emphasizes, “You can’t skip steps or rush the process. Each phase must be approached with patience.”
However, what happened toward the end of the 2023-2024 season and the beginning of the current one raises questions. Militão played 459 minutes between April and May, and then clocked 1,311 out of 1,470 possible minutes (89%) early in the new season before suffering his second injury.
The Goal: A Strong Start to 2025-2026
Militão is currently listed in Real Madrid’s squad for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. While he may not feature in the matches, his inclusion marks an important step in his full return. Under the guidance of new head coach Xabi Alonso, Militão is preparing to begin the 2025-2026 season at full capacity.
Medical and technical reports suggest that Militão can return to his previous level—perhaps even surpass it. He has already proven his unique defensive capabilities through his strength, tactical awareness, and fighting spirit. Now, after passing this grueling test, he adds a new layer of maturity and professionalism to his profile.
Expert View: A Complete Comeback is Possible
Romario Queiroz is confident that Militão can fully recover and regain his top form. “He’s fully focused on making a strong comeback. He’s working hard and knows exactly what it takes,” Queiroz says. “Yes, it’s normal for people to have doubts after this kind of injury—it’s the toughest and longest to recover from in football. But we can expect a new Militão, more eager and competitive than ever.”
He adds, “Mentally, he’s in a great place. Physically, we’re continuing to work to bring him back in the most efficient and safest way, without rushing.”
Recurring Injuries… Who’s to Blame?
Militão is not the only Real Madrid player recently affected by ACL injuries. Marco Asensio tore his in 2019, Alaba last season, and Dani Carvajal this year. The trend has led many to question the underlying causes. Queiroz points to a combination of factors: “It’s multifactorial, and we can’t point to just one reason. But the overloaded calendar is a major contributor.”
He elaborates, “Match volume has increased significantly, with higher intensity levels and more high-speed actions per game. This puts immense stress on players. With shorter recovery times between matches, the risk of injury becomes much higher.”
Looking Ahead: A Defensive Leader with New Determination
As the 2025-2026 season kicks off, Militão is expected to be fully fit and ready to reclaim his place in the starting eleven. With Xabi Alonso at the helm, the Brazilian defender might find new opportunities to assert his leadership and vital role in the backline.
His return also represents a psychological boost for the dressing room. Militão is one of those players who combines technical quality with charisma. His journey is a blueprint for resilience and professionalism, and he is sure to serve as an example to his teammates for his determination, commitment, and discipline in the face of adversity.
